Family Response to Sir Ian Blair's Guardian Interview

In response to the comment by former Metropolitan Police Commissioner Sir Ian Blair in today's Guardian, Ian's widow Julia Tomlinson said:

It is totally shocking. I can't believe that he thinks what happened to Ian has to happen to someone else. Can't the police learn lessons and change?

Assaulting an unarmed citizen walking away from the police is not a method of crowd control and can never be acceptable to the public. What needs control is the police officers. It's no wonder that the Mayor got rid of him. We hope that the current commissioner will distance himself from his comments.

DPP announces Tominson prosecution decision coming 'in a few months'

The Director of Public Prosecutions, Keir Starmer, has given an indication of the progress of the Crown Prosecution Service in reaching a decision about action to take in Ian Tomlinson's case.

"We've got the files and we're looking at them," he said. "Those questions are really hard, because I always feel as if we're stalling. I would hope [to have a decision] within a few months. My view on these things is we should move quickly. We've got it, we're looking at it, we want to go as quickly as we can, but it's not imminent."

Tomlinson Family Say “CPS Must Leave It To A Jury” After IPCC Refer Evidence To CPS

Today the family of Ian Tomlinson, who died at the G20 protests on 1st April 2009, responded to the news that the Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC) have passed their file of evidence to the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS).

The CPS will make now make a charge decision based on the evidence that the IPCC has provided them with.

The widow of Ian Tomlinson, Julia Tomlinson, said:

“It has been a very difficult four months since Ian died and it is a relief to see some progress. The last information that the coroner put out was Dr Cary’s view that Ian died from internal bleeding. Video footage made it clear to us, and everyone else, that Ian was the victim of an unprovoked assault by a police officer. If there is going to be any justice then it must be left for a jury to decide if the police officer is guilty of killing Ian. I hope the CPS will get the case in front of a jury as soon as possible. We would like to thank everyone who came forward as witnesses”.
