Statement from Tomlinson family re: HMIC G20 Report

A spokesperson for the family said today:

"We are looking for answers and an explanation as to why Ian is dead. We can’t find those answers in this report.

The report confirms that Ian was trapped in the area and that officers were then authorised to use force to clear it. At 5pm the police commanders ordered the use of “reasonable force” on people who had not left the Bank of England area by 7.00pm. The report says that by 8.45pm ‘the dispersal of the crowd at the Bank of England was complete’ but it does not mention that at about 7.20pm Ian had collapsed on the ground after being assaulted by police.

We have no doubts that the police are responsible for Ian’s death. Had he been allowed to leave or if force had not been used on him he would be here today."

G20 police authorised to use 'reasonable force' minutes before Ian died

Metropolitan police commanders at the G20 demonstrations ordered officers to clear the streets of protesters using "reasonable force" if necessary, minutes before a police constable attacked Ian Tomlinson, says the report, by Denis O'Connor, the Chief Inspector of Constabulary.

Officer under investigation over Ian's death should not have been working for Met

The policeman being questioned over the death of passer-by Ian Tomlinson at the G20 protests in April had been wrongly re-employed by the Metropolitan Police after leaving while facing a serious disciplinary charge.

Pathologist in first post-mortem is suspended

The Home Office pathologist who ruled that Ian died of a heart attack has been suspended pending investigations into his professional conduct.

Freddy Patel, who conducted the first post-mortem examination on the newspaper vendor from east London and concluded he died of a heart attack, has been removed from the government register of accredited forensic pathologists amid concern as to whether he has breached regulations.

Police floated imposter theory

A senior police officer who investigated the death of Ian Tomlinson told his family that the officer who struck him at the G20 demonstrations could have been a member of the public "dressed in police uniform".
